Robotic Surgery Q & A

What is the da Vinci Surgical System?

The da Vinci® Surgical System is a machine featuring a camera arm and several additional mechanical arms that have various surgical instruments attached to them. Dr. Himsl controls the arms of the robot at a nearby console, and a 3-D image of the surgery site from the camera appears on a monitor located at the console.

How does the da Vinci Surgical System work?

The da Vinci Surgical System provides Dr. Himsl with several features that give it an advantage over traditional surgery for specific issues:

A 3-D high-definition camera system

The da Vinci’s camera allows Dr. Himsl to view the surgical site from angles that simply aren’t possible otherwise.

An extra arm

The daVinci system has three operating arms, expanding Dr. Himsl’s capabilities.

Image referencing

The da Vinci’s monitor can also display reference material next to the image of the surgical site, providing important information for the procedure when necessary.

An extra-mobile wrist

The wrist mechanism on the robotic arms can twist and move with a greater range of motion than the human wrist.

Precise movements

The calibration between the robotic arm and Dr. Himsl’s hand can adjust for movements as fine as fractions of an inch, deeply simplifying complex procedures.

What conditions does Dr. Himsl treat with robotic surgery?

Some of the more common conditions that Dr. Himsl treats with the assistance of robotic surgery include:

  • Bladder cancer
  • Prostate cancer
  • Kidney cancer
  • Urinary blockages

What are the advantages of robotic surgery?

Robotic surgery allows Dr. Himsl a greater degree of precision and control during operations, and also allows him to have a much better view of the surgical site than a non-robotic procedure. Because of this, he can perform some surgical procedures that wouldn’t be possible otherwise without robotic surgery.

Robotic surgery also allows for more minimally invasive surgical procedures, often allowing benefits such as:

  • Fewer complications from the procedure
  • Quicker recovery
  • Fewer or smaller scars
  • Less pain during recovery
